Calcutta or Kolkata as it is now called was the erstwhile capital of India before it was shifted to New Delhi. Kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal, owes its birth to Sir Job Charnock, who had bought 3 villages for a paltry sum of money. Kolkata’s colonial legacy is visible in its innumerable heritage buildings, club culture, love for English music and Anglo Indian food.

Situated as the only metro city in the east of the country, Kolkata is known as the cultural capital of India. Artists of every genre of creative art consider the Kolkatans to be a knowledgeable audience.

One can explore the national museum and art galleries along with luxury shopping malls like Quest. You have the modern and the not so modern jostling for space in this city. One can take a walk over the Howrah Bridge, an engineering marvel built in 1943, often referred to as the world’s busiest bridge; or take an evening cruise along the river and behold all the heritage building along the shores, you can visit the Ramakrishna Temple, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission worldwide and marvel at the Victoria Memorial, the city’s pride and joy, with its extensive historical collections, fascinating architecture and beautiful waterways and gardens.

The people of Kolkata are known for their love of food. Essentially fish and rice eaters but the Bengali(as the people of this state are referred to) will experiment with Chinese, Mughal, Mexican, Italian, Indian and very recently even Japanese. Innumerable restaurants compete for ratings along with most delectable street food.

The state of West Bengal is richly endowed with the Himalaya mountains to the north, forests to the south and the sea to the south east. Getting away on the weekends to Darjeeling (yes, famous for the Darjeeling tea) or to the Sunderbans (home to the Royal Bengal tiger) or to Digha for some sun and sand is easy.

It is easy to get distracted by the exterior of the city but we invite you to do the TEFL Course I Kolkata and connect with its soul and return with memories to last you a lifetime.
