Koh Kong City - Cambodia

Koh Kong City - Cambodia

Location

Koh Kong City is the capital of Koh Kong province, a comparatively small provincial town sitting on the east side of the Kaoh Pao River about 10km from the Cham Yeam international border crossing with Thailand.

Koh Kong is linked to Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville by highway 48, which branches off National Highway 4 at Sre Ambel. It’s a good scenic drive through some of Cambodia’s least developed and unspoiled regions – the Cardamom Mountains. Minibuses and tourist air-con buses to and from Koh Kong leave mainly in the mornings.

Around Koh Kong, there are islands, mountains, jungles, rivers, waterfalls, a zoo, casino, and a lot more. The spectacular Cardamom Mountains, pristine and mostly untouched jungle, offer many waterfalls to cool down with a swim. Water sport options include everything from snorkelling to kayaking. Land lovers will find jungle trekking, hiking and mountain biking, to name but a few. The largest mangrove forest in Asia is located here on the coast.

In addition to trekking and exploring the forest in the Cardamom Mountains, there are boat trips available to Koh Kong Island and other islands in the vicinity. Koh Kong Island is considered one of the best beaches in SE Asia.

With bicycles and motorcycles available for rent, there are great options for self-exploration in Koh Kong City in Cambodia and the wider province.

For those who prefer less strenuous activities there are many restaurants and bars in Koh Kong City. At night the river front past the bridge comes alive after 4pm. Sugar cane juice vendors and various others sell BBQ meat, beer etc. It is a nice walk.

The first-class hotel, Koh Kong Resort, is a Casino Hotel on the border of Cambodia and Thailand.

2. What is an average program day like?

Class time is generally 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with mid- morning and afternoon breaks and a lunch break. For approximately two weeks, you will be preparing to teach, learning all of the things you need to know in order to be successful in the classroom, with practice classroom teaching sessions. During the first 2 weeks you will go to an International school to observe the English teachers teaching in an actual classroom, times are between 17:30 and 18:30. During the last 2 weeks, you will actually do practical teaching each day, and prepare your lesson materials.

3. How many students on average are in the program each month?

The maximum class size in the Koh Kong location is 10. We keep this number low so that we can provide our trainees with the individualized attention they deserve. Most of the participants are American, British, Canadian, Australian, or South African; as well we do accept non-native speakers of English who have a high proficiency in the language.

4. Is there a dress code?

During trainees’ lessons, casual attire is allowed. Cambodia can get rather hot so this means sandals, shorts, t-shirts and other loose-fitting clothing, cotton attire is best. During teacher practice and observation sessions, there are specific dress requirements that adhere to the local working culture and basic ideas of professionalism. You will need to dress in trousers/skirts and closed-toe shoes. Men need collared shirts, while women need to wear conservative tops that cover their shoulders. Men also need to shave or keep facial hair neatly trimmed. No visible tattoos or facial piercings are allowed while teaching local students. We ask that you be respectful and mindful of your peers and the cultural norms of Cambodia.

5. What are the teaching practice students and classes like?

The students are school children as well as adults. The students range from beginners to intermediate. The experience gained in this way will benefit you tremendously. Taking your development step by step only helps you to gain more confidence and help to build your own style of teaching.

6. Can I bring my Laptop?

Yes, please do. You might find having your laptop available handy for completing some teaching practice materials. Wi-Fi is free at our location, and widely available in Cambodia. If you choose not to bring your laptop, all the countries have many inexpensive convenient local neighborhood Internet cafes. But a computer or laptop is one of the handiest items you can have as a teacher as the web has never ending resources of teaching and training material.

7. What are the accommodations for the program?

We have in-house, accommodation with en-suite bathroom for 4 weeks at $200 USD. You are not obliged to use the accommodation option we provide so you are welcome to make your own accommodation arrangements if you wish. We have ongoing arrangements with several local hotels and guesthouses that provide our students with special monthly rates. All our recommended options are within walking distance of the school. We have also inspected all options to make sure they provide rooms and facilities that will ensure you have a comfortable stay. Upon receipt of your course deposit we will send you all the relevant details of the available options. If you choose to use one of our accommodation options, it should be paid for directly to the provider upon arrival or as arranged when doing the booking. If you have any questions or concerns about your accommodation in Koh Kong, please contact us and we will do all we can to help.

8. What’s the climate like? What kind of clothing will I need to bring?

Most of the time, it is hot and humid. But, it can get cool during the winter months. It is not necessary to bring too many clothes with you as clothes are rather inexpensive and can be purchased locally. We recommend packing light for your initial training. A lightweight raincoat can come in handy.

You will get a warm welcome in Koh Kong in Cambodia, The Kingdom of Wonders.
